Someone correct me if I'm misremembering this story, but as I remember it it goes like this:

The Faroese were very proud when the Danish king decided to send them a Bishop, and enthusiastically embraced Christianity. Their new Bishop was an architect, and designed them a wonderful new cathedral - of a sensible size for the relatively small community of Faroese at the time. They set to work building it with a will, with the Bishop overseeing the work, and telling everyone what to do. You can see the walls and arched windows.

But it was never finished. It still stands today in the condition in which construction was abandoned. The unfortunate Bishop had not realized how valuable timber was to the Faroese - who were reliant on driftwood and expensive imports for the construction of their boats. When he started telling them about the construction of the cathedral roof, they decided it was time to incinerate their Bishop, and they did.

They were, of course, committed Christians by then. So they built the adjacent church to their own design - with a stone vault roof.

You have to look at the full view to even see the cathedral. I might put up an expanded view of the cathedral and church, but I like the view of the islands in the background.

It is. Pretty much the whole of the Faroe islands are - ranging from stunning to lovely, and interesting throughout.

Uh, great story.

Sounds like a wonderful old celtic fairy fable...

cool story to go with the art. However, the places looks like new zealand for some odd reason.

I've no idea how true it is, but it ought to be possible to find out - there's written records dating from the first arrival of people in the Faroes.

Similar latitude, similar geology (to part of New Zealand, anyway).

aahhhh that would explain it I guess :) but nice pic none the less! :D
